SCAMMON - Fr. Harold Edward York, 87, of Scammon, died at 6:15 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, at Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center in Pittsburg.

He was born April 18, 1916, at Carl Junction, Mo., to Walter and Nell Eddington York.

He graduated from Joplin, Mo., High School.

He worked for Western Union until entering Conception Seminary at Conception, Mo. He was ordained on June 8, 1947, at Sacred Heart Chapel in Wichita. He received a master of arts degree at Catholic University in June 1947. Following his ordination, he was appointed assistant at Blessed Sacrament Parish in Wichita. He was the superintendent at St. Mary's Cathedral High School from June 1947 to February 1948.

On Feb. 21, 1948, he moved to Pittsburg, where he was assistant at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. He became the U.S. Reserve chaplain at Pittsburg on Oct. 22, 1948.

In October 1950, he was appointed as a chaplain in the U.S. Air Force. He resigned from military service in the summer of 1957 and returned to Pittsburg, where he did teaching and Newman Club work until he moved back to the Diocese of Wichita.

On July 1, 1964, he was appointed pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Fredonia. He served on the Diocesan CCD Board in 1967. He moved to Wichita in February 1969 to become pastor at St. Thomas-Aquinas Parish, where he served until being appointed on July 29, 1971, to be the pastor at St. Mark's Parish at Colwich.

He moved back to Pittsburg in July 1974 and became the chaplain at St. Pius X Newman Center.

After almost six years, he moved to Cherryvale, where he served as the pastor at St. Francis Xavier Parish. On Nov. 29, 1984, he was appointed pastor at St. Martin Parish at Caldwell, where he would remain until he retired on July 11, 1994.

Survivors include five brothers, Herschell York and W.L. York Jr., both of Columbus, Robert York of rural Galena, Gerald York of rural Pittsburg, and Jim York of Apache Junction, Ariz.; and one sister, Ruth Hitchcock of Coulee Dam, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Marie Goad.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Msgr. Robert Hemberger, diocese administrator, as celebrant. Fr. Michael Simone will be the homilist.

The parish rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.

Following the rosary, the family will receive friends until 8 p.m. Friends may call at Brenner Mortuary in Pittsburg after 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Burial will be at a later date at Our Lady of Clear Creek Monastery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Brenner Mortuary.
