Herschell L. York, 86, of Columbus, died at his home on Wednesday, March 3, 2005.

He was born April 18, 1918 in Lawton, to Walter and Nell Eddington York.

He attended area schools.

He served his country in the U.S. Army, during World War II. He was honorably discharged on Jan. 17, 1946 in Ft. Logan, Colo., as a First Sergeant. While serving his country he received the American Defense Service Medal, American Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal with Clasp.

He married Kay Marshall on Aug. 17, 1946. She survives of the home.

He worked for Spencer Chemical, known today as Gulf Chemical, as a maintenance mechanic for 35 years retiring in 1984.

He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Columbus.

Additional survivors include his son, Dennis York of Piedmont, Okla.; daughter, Sunny Pierce of Girard; brothers, W.L. York Jr. of Columbus, Robert York of Galena, Gerald D. York of Pittsburg, and Jim York of Apache Junction, Ariz.; sister, Ruth Hitchcock of Coulee Dam Washington; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Randy York; a brother, Fr. Harold York; and sister, Marie Good.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Columbus, with Rev. James Shope officiating.

Burial will follow in the Carl Junction Cemetery in Carl Junction, Mo.

Flag folding ceremony will be given by the Ft. Leonard Wood Funeral Detail Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Friends may call the funeral home after 4 p.m. today.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, 611 S. East Ave., Columbus.
