Susie Bell Wood Lester, 98, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 13, 2013, at Piedmont Crossing Retirement Center in Thomasville, NC. She was born May 29, 1915, in Hiawassee (Towns County), Georgia. She married James William Lester in 1935. She moved with her family from Georgia to Thomasville, NC, around 1938. In the early 1940s the family moved to Greensboro where she continued her education, worked as a licensed practical nurse and devoted herself to raising her family.

She is a graduate of Guilford Technical Community College. She worked for many years on the health-care staff of the Masonic Home in Greensboro and at Greensboro Health Care. She was a member of the State Street Church of God and Pinecroft Church of God in Greensboro for more than 50 years, and for the past 17 years has been a member of Thomasville Church of God.

She is survived by four children: James C. Lester and wife Faye of Richmond, VA; Margaret L. Mock and husband Bill of Fredericksburg, VA; Douglas J. Lester of Raleigh, NC; and Frederick W. Lester of Round Rock, TX. She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Amy Lester of Plainfield, VT; Andy Lester-Niles and wife Paige of Winston-Salem, NC; Ashley Lester of Seneca, SC; Aaron Lester and wife Kristin of Boston, MA; Austin Lester of Greensboro, NC; Martha Mock and husband Jeffrey Choppin of Rochester, NY; Sara Caswell of Fredericksburg, VA; Karyn Hidalgo and husband Brad of Orlando, FL; Bryan Lester of Round Rock, TX.

In addition she is survived by 12 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, James W. Lester, her parents, Hubbard Pinkney and Bertha Ann Kimsey Wood, and five sisters: Neva Morrison; Ann Worley; Evelyn Wilborne; Bonnie Howington and Opal Miller. In addition to family, she leaves behind her devoted friends Margaret and Thomas Cain; Nora and Wayne Harden; her loving care givers from Hospice of Davidson County and Piedmont Crossing; and her church family.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home Sedgefield Chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until service time with a reception to be held following the interment service at Guilford Memorial Park.
