George T. Hansen Jr. 1918-2003~~~

George T. Hansen Jr., who loved his family, his friends, his collection of model trains, his big band records and his many Labrador Retrievers, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 22, 2003. He was 85.

George was born on January 1, 1918 to Beatrice Mary Knight and George T. Hansen Sr., in Salt Lake City, Utah.

George could be "ornery," "frustrating" and "crabby," but there wasn't a kinder heart, a more willing hand or a "softer touch" than his.

He grew up in Salt Lake City and after attending East High School, attended the University of Utah and Westminster College, graduating in 1939. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, reaching the rank of Captain.

Following the war, George joined his father's oil exploration company, Utah Southern Oil Co., and ultimately formed and managed his own oil company, Hyland Oil Corporation. He served on numerous boards and committees during his life including those for the Hansen Planetarium, which his mother donated to Salt Lake City during the latter part of her life, Westminster College, the Salt Lake City Petroleum Club, the Cottonwood Club, where he was a founding member, Ducks Unlimited and the Chesapeake Duck Club.

He had two real joys in his life. The first was water and boating. He loved to spend all his free time either boating on Hebgen Lake or watching the sunset over the Pacific in Oceanside. His other love was building things; hot rods, boats, model trains and larger than life Christmas decorations that annually graced his front yard and welcomed passers by and winked at the neighbors.

He also had an incredible knack for creating nicknames. Every member of the family had a given name and a nickname, sometimes two. It was a fun way that he showed his love for them. George is survived by his wife Blanche Burdick Hansen; two sons, George T. Hansen III (Susan) and Mark B. Hansen (Kim); one daughter, Elizabeth Hansen; five loving grandchildren, Stephanie "Dee Dee" West, Christopher "Chrisy" Hansen, Holly "Dolly Doo-Da" Huntington, Jordan "Herk" Hansen and Priscilla "Miss Prissy" Hansen; and two wonderful great grandchildren, Amanda and Molly West.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 25, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at the Cottonwood Mortuary, 4670 South Highland Drive. Internment will follow the services at the Holladay Cemetery, 4900 Memory Lane (behind the Cottonwood Mall). Family and friends may gather at the Mortuary on Monday night from, 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the funeral services.
