There were many newspaper articles written at the time this great lady passed, I am extremely proud to be her Great- Granddaughter....the tributes are as follows:

Headline - Beatrice M. Hansen dies in Salt Lake at 88

***A note....although many of these articles said Beatrice M. (Mary) Hansen was born in Salt Lake City, she was actually born in Evanston, Wyoming.****

A Salt Lake City philanthropist and civic worker, Mrs. George T. (Beatrice M.) Hansen, died Aug. 4, 1981 at a local convalescent home following a long illness. She was 88.

Mrs. Hansen was the widow of George T. Hansen, founder of Utah Southern Oil Co. After his death in 1963 she donated $400,000 to convert the old Salt Lake City Library into the Hansen Planetarium (which is now the Clark Planetarium in 2013). She subsequently made substantial contributions to expand the planetarium's program and add to it's exhibits.

Mrs. Hansen spent the last 32 years of her life working on philanthropic and civic projects. These included the contribution of the Dane Hansen Stadium at Westminster College and sizeable donations to fund student scholarships, stadium upkeep and college operating expenses.

A patron of the arts, she also made considerable contributions to the University of Utah Ballet and Utah Symphony.

She spent most of the last three years of her life in a rest home, and during that time her civic and charity work was perpetuated by the George T. Hansen Foundation, which she and her husband established.

Mrs. Hansen was born Sept. 2, 1891 in Evanston, Wyoming. She was the daughter of Arthur C. and Mary Ann Baguley Knight. She married George T. Hansen on February 1917, in Salt Lake City. He died March 16, 1963.

She is survived by a son and daughter. George T. Hansen, Jr. and Hope Celeste Watkins, Idaho Falls; six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Joseph Brown, Salt Lake City and Mrs. Nell K. Smith of Seattle.

Cryptside services for family members only will be held Friday at the Shrine of Memories Mausoleum. The family suggests contributions to St. Joseph's Villa, Salt Lake City.

Mrs. Beatrice M. Hansen - August 5, 1981 - Deseret News

"Philanthropy," said Thoreau, "is almost the only virtue which is sufficiently appreciated by mankind."

Certainly all of Utah is the beneficiary of the charitable works of Mrs. Beatrice M. Hansen, who died this week in Salt Lake City at the age of 88.

Without the philanthropic gifts of George T. and Beatrice Hansen, Utah would be much the poorer culturally, philosophically, and in matters of education. Their contributions of time, talents and means have enabled thousands of Utahans to enjoy a more comfortable, knowledgeable, and uplifting life.

Mrs. Hansen's initial $400,000 gift in 1965 after her husband's death enabled Salt Lake City to retain ownership of the old city library and to convert it to the present planetarium - the only one of it's kind between Chicago and the West Coast when it was first built. Subsequent donations helped the planetarium to improve its educational programs and physical facilities and to develop the star shows that are now used in hundreds of schools and by nearly every major planetarium in the world. One, named "The Loneliness Factor," concerned the chemical content of the universe and was syndicated on a global basis.

The planetarium alone would have been a fitting memorial for Beatrice Hansen. There were many others. The Dane Hansen Memorial Stadium at Westminster College was a gift from her and her husband in 1949, in honor of their son who was killed in World War II. In addition, she contributed freely to the Utah Symphony, the University of Utah Ballet Department and many other worthy causes.

Utahans are richer in many ways for the life of Beatrice M. Hansen. The Deseret News extends its condolences to her family and many friends in her passing.
