George Troup Hansen, 83, 1409 Federal Way, founder and first president of Utah Southern Oil Company and a prominent Utah Republican, died of causes incident to age Saturday, March 16, 1963 at 11:30 p.m. in a Salt Lake rest home, St. Josephs Villa.

Mr. Hansen served as president of Utah Southern Oil from its beginning in 1921. He was elected chairman of the board in August, 1957, and served in that position until his retirement in 1958.

Active in the Republican Party, Mr. Hansen served 14 years as GOP National committeeman for Utah from 1942 to 1956.

He had been chairman of the finance committee of the Utah Republican Party for many years, and served as chairman of the committee on state delegate contests at the National GOP convention at Chicago in 1952.

He retired from active politics in 1956.

A prominent Utah Masonic leader, Mr. Hansen was commissioned intendant general of the Red Cross of Constantine in January, 1950, a position that made him Utah's ranking York Rite Mason.

He also was a Scottish Rite Knight Commander, Court of Honor elect, and noble of El Kalah Temple, Mystic Shrine. He was a member of Progress Lodge 22, F&AM

A former trustee and active supporter of Westminster College, Mr. Hansen was awarded an LLD honorary degree from Westminster in 1952. Mr. Hansen and his wife donated the Dane Hansen Memorial Stadium to the college in honor of their son who was killed during World War II.

He was for many years a member of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers, and had been a trustee and vice president of the Rocky Mountain Region of Ducks unlimited. He also was a former member of the Salt Lake City Chamber of Commerce and the zoning board of adjustment.

Born at Logan, Kansas, February 22, 1880, he was a son of Peter and Alpha Hansen. He graduated with a B.S. degree in mining engineering at the University of Kansas.

During his college days he was a close associate of Alfred M. Landon, who later was the Republican candidate for U.S. president.

Mr. Hansen's career in the minerals industry began in Mexico in 1905 when he was a millman for the Cananea Consolidated Copper Company. He was advanced to sales engineer and later to metallurgical engineer, resigning to join Allis Chalmers Manufacturing Company in 1906.

He came to Salt Lake City as the firm's district manager in 1911, and remained at this post until 1921 when he and his associates incorporated the Utah Southern Oil Company.

Under his leadership, Utah Southern Oil grew to an exploration and production company with an annual gross of several million dollars.

Mr. Hansen married Beatrice Mary Knight in 1917 at Salt Lake City.

Survivors include his widow, a son, George T. Hansen, Jr., Salt Lake City, and a daughter, Mrs. George W. (Hope) Watkins Sr., Idaho Falls, Idaho. He also is survived by six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; a brother, D. G. Hansen, and a sister, Dr. Kate I. Hansen, both of Logan, Kansas.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 1 p.m. at 574 E. 1st South, under the direction of Progress Lodge 22, F&AM. Friends may call Tuesday evening and Wednesday one-half hour prior to services.

Private Masonic entombment services will be at the Shrine of Memories Mausoleum. Friends so wishing may make memorial contributions to the St. Josephs Villa.
