William Duncan Gilkey was born to William Elbert Gilkey and Mary Dunham on October 7, 1887 in Kansas and he died February 13, 1961.

He married first Golda Hug. They had five children: Stanford, Norman, Frances, Lenore and Lionel.

Golda was committed to the Oregon State Insane Hospital and appears on a 1930 Census and in 1940 Golda was at the Eastern Oregon Mental Hospital. William divorced Golda. Golda spent her entire life as a ward of Oregon State. When she died she was living, as a welfare ward, at Columbia Retirement Center in St. Helens, Oregon. There is nothing to tell how she came to be placed there, except that she did have a state caseworker. Golda died at this retirement home and was buried in an unmarked grave at Columbia Memorial Cemetery, Scappoose, Oregon.

Lionel was placed in a home for the Feeble-minded. 1940 Census shows him at a facility in Pringle, Marion Co., Oregon.

Stanford was placed in a state facility, orphanage.

Norman, Frances and Lenore grew up in the Oregon-Washington Pythian Home in Vancouver, Washington.

William married a second time, Louise Wilson Pietzold. Her first husband was Alfred G. Pietzold.
