Death Comes Suddenly to George Bauer
Following a brief illness, George Bauer, retired farmer and a citizen of southwestern Nebraska for 63 years, died at his home in Culbertson at 8:00 p.m. on Monday, October 11, at the age of 77.
Mr. Bauer, who lived alone in basement rooms of the W.M. Wagner residence, appeared to be in his usual rugged health Monday forenoon, when he did light work around his home. He complained of not feeling well early in the afternoon, but his critical condition did not become evident until several hours later.
A native of Frank, Russia, Mr. Bauer came to America with his parents when 14 years of age. The family located in McCook, Neb., where Mr. Bauer was united in marriage with Katherine Brenning on March 28, 1896. They were the parents of eight children, six of whom survive their father. Their youngest daughter died in infancy, and a son, Joe, passed away in 1935.
Shortly after their marriage, Mr. Bauer and his wife located on a farm northeast of Culbertson, which remained their home for 34 years. In 1930, they retired and moved to Culbertson, where Mrs. Bauer died on December 22, 1944.
Funeral services were held here in the German Congregational church on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with the Herrmann Funeral Home of McCook in charge of the arrangements. Rev. Fred Dodzuweit, pastor of the church, conducted the services. Old-time hymns were sung by a quartet composed of Rev. W.H. Lenz, Rev. F.E. Schroeder, Mrs. George Gerlach and Mrs. Dorsey Lehman, with Mrs. Everett Kern as accompanist. Burial was in the Culbertson cemetery.
Left to mourn the passing of their devoted father are one son, John, of Culbertson, and five daughters, Mrs. Katie Yost of Denver, Mrs. Amelia Fahrenbruch of Bertrand, Neb., Mrs. Frieda Gies and Mrs. Pauline Hageman of Culbertson and Mrs. Rachel Gerbitz of Holyoke, Colo. Other survivors are 15 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one sister and one brother.
