Samuel Lovejoy (or Lovjoy) was the 6th of eight children born to Lt. William Lovejoy and Mary Gibbons (Farnum) Lovejoy.

His older siblings were William, Henery, Mary, Alice and Caleb. His younger siblings were Abigail and Lydia.

Samuel married his 2nd cousin, Hannah Stevens,on Apr. 23, 1717. They had ten children, all born in Andover (see Hannah's memorial for list).

Samuel's grandfather, John Lovejoy, and Hannah's great-grandfather, John Stevens, were among the first settlers of Andover. Their common great grandparents, Ralph and Alice Farnum, were immigrants to Ipswich.

Samuel was a yeoman and husbandman.
