AMHERST - Surrounded by family, Charles William Vinson, 88 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, was called home into the presence of the Lord, Saturday, November 2, 2013, at Ames Family Hospice House following a brief battle with cancer.
Charles was born to the late Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Vinson on December 18, 1924, in Red Bay, Alabama, before moving with his family to Nashville, Tennessee. In 1954, he moved to Cleveland and then to Amherst in 1958, where he had made his home for the past 55 years.
Charles worked as an assembler for 30 years for the Ford Motor Co. in Lorain. He attended First Baptist Church in Elyria for two years, especially enjoying the senior adult activities. Prior to this, he attended Church of the Open Door for many years. He enjoyed tinkering as a craftsman and being a handyman. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater as a medic, serving with the officer's staff. His hobbies included woodworking, fishing, boating on Lake Erie, camping and cruises. He had a fond affection for his pet dog as well.
Survivors include his daughters and their husbands, Barbara and James Shehan of North Ridgeville and Hilma and Richard Shehan of Wakeman; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Charles was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Gladys Faye Vinson (nee Hardin) in 2009; his sister, Alline Johnston; as well as his parents.
Friends may call Wednesday, November 6, 2013, from 4-6 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Craig Golden, pastor to the senior adults of First Baptist Church, Elyria will officiate.
Burial will follow at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township. Military honors will be provided by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard.
