John Upp was a blacksmith and a sickle maker. He established a log shop on Plum Run in the northeastern corner of the township. He constructed their first cabin home on the south side of the same stream, commemorated today by a township road, known as the Upp Road.

John and Sallie Upp were the parents of the following children: William 1804-Mar. 30, 1866 (his first wife, Sarah S., born in 1826 passed away Aug. 19, 1853). The second wife of William Upp, also named Sarah, born in 1829, survived until July 1892. The second son of John Upp, George Upp, born in 1807, survived until June 4, 1881 (his wife, Elizabeth, was born in 1810), Eliza (McCoy), Melinda (Hewitt), Mary (Murdock) and Sarah 1819-Jan. 29, 1897, who was the wife of Henry F. Foreacre, Feb. 22, 1818-Sept. 29, 1903. They reared their family in the Carmel area.
