Underberg, Emily B.

Emily B. Underberg, age 96, of 3329 South 10th Street, Manitowoc, entered eternal life on Monday, September 25, 2012 at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc.

Emily was born March 1, 1916 in Valders. She was the daughter of the lated Rudolph and Louise Christel Kletzien and also the granddaughter of Willaim F. Christel, the founder of Valders. Emily attended St. Boniface School and continued her education at the Manitowoc Vocational School to obtain her high school credits and finished her education at the Green Bay Academy of Religion. On September 18, 1940 she married Donald Underberg at the Holy Innocents Catholic Church rectory. He preceded her in death on April 12, 2000. Emily had been employed for seven years by Mr. & Mrs. Charles West as a professional maid. After her marriage she completed an apprentice program through the Manitowoc Vocational School and received her operator and managers license and was employed at the Vogue Beauty Salon. Emily was also an avid aerial performer for the Billy Schultz Circus, performing on the revolving trapeze-suspended in the air while doing somersaults without any net or restraints. She was known as the "queen of the revolving trapeze" and in 1938 she broke the world's record which was recorded by NBC by turning 146 backward summersaults spinning head over heals on the high bar, hanging on only by her arms. Her act was known as the "muscle grind" for the strength and endurance it took to accomplish it. Emily was also involved in the former Holy Innocents Catholic Church, becoming president and mistress of novices for its Secular Franciscan Order, coordinator of it religious education program and Eucharistic minister and received the name of Sister Mary S.F.O. She also served in this capacity at Holy Family Hospital. Emily was a Girl Scout leader and received her 45 year pin as a volunteer and also received an honorary life time membership. She is a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and in past years had served as President of the St. Theresa Society. Emily enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing and her flower garden.

Emily is survived by one sister and brother-in-law: Mildred and Edward Keller, Las Vegas, NV; nieces, nephews along with other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents: Rudolph and Louise Kletzien; husband: Donald Underberg; three brothers and two sisters.
