The son of Johannes P. & Sarah Klinger, in 1850 he lived with his family in Lykens, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. In 1860, he was a boatman by trade but is not found in the 1860 census. He stood 5' 5" tall and had sandy hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg February 9, 1865, mustered into federal service there February 14 as a private with Co. L, 13th Pennsylvania Cavalry (117th Pa), and honorably discharged July 13, 1865, by general order.

After the war, he married Mary unk. and fathered Harry W. (b. 02/19/73, d. 06/28/74). By 1870, he was living in Liverpool, Perry County, where he was a member of Post 409, G.A.R.
