Two men named John Peters of similar age appear in the 1860 census living in or near Middletown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, but it is as yet unknown which or if either was this man. He married and fathered at least one child, but further information must await the post-covid-19 reopening of the National Archives and access to the pension file his widow filed. There is an organizational pension index available online but no alphabetic index that likely would give us his wife's name.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Middletown, Dauphin County, July 1, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Washington DC July 27 as a private with Co. G, 6th Pennsylvania Reserves (35th Pennsylvania Infantry). Seriously wounded at the battle of Antietam either on the evening of September 16, 1862, or the early morning hours of the day following, he died at the field hospital located as Susan Hoffman's house along the Keedysville Road. His remains were shipped home and buried allegedly on September 27.

He is in the company register with a middle initial of "M," but his pension index uses "H," which is what appears to be on the tombstone.
