Joseph Dillard Baldwin, 69, longtime county government official, civic and religious leader, died August 14, 1987 at his residence in Madison following an illness of several months. Mr. Baldwin was a retired Clerk of Morgan County Superior Court, a position he held for thirty years.
He was the youngest son of the late William Whitfield and Sarah Quillian Baldwin, who were community leaders and members of two of the county's best known families. Joe Baldwin was born March 3, 1918, in Madison and lived most of his life in Morgan County.
A civic leader, he was a longtime member, former president and Lieutenant Governor of the Kiwanis Club. He was an early trustee of Morgan County Foundation Inc. and was treasurer in the years that Madison-Morgan County Cultural Center was conceived and brought to fruition. He was a member of Morgan County Historical Society and was recognized as one of the county's best historians.
Mr. Baldwin was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Madison all of his life. He served the church in all the capacities and was a familiar sight in the church choir, in which he sang tenor for much of his lifetime. At the time he became ill he was serving as chairman of the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee. He was a former chairman of the church's Board of Trustees and served as superintendent of the Sunday School for many years.
He was married to the late Elizabeth Harris Baldwin who died several years ago. He is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Robert Turnell, Mrs. Walter Wise, Mrs. J.D. Harris, all of Madison, and Mrs. Bernard Harris, of Rome, and two brothers, Mr. William Whitfield Baldwin and Mr. Asbury Quillian Baldwin, both of Madison. A third brother, Mr. Charles Baldwin, died several years ago. He is also survived by a number nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at two o'clock at the First United Methodist Church in Madison. The Reverend Layne Jenkins, pastor officiated. Burial was in Morgan Memorial Park.
Simmons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
The family has asked that in lieu of flowers those who wish make contributions to the Organ Fund in the First United Methodist Church of Madison.
