Might have been born 1791 or 1792. My chart also says death might have been April 1841.Importer, started coastal line to Providence, Rhode Island in 1823. Owned the schooners Harriet Porter (1833), Rampart (1817), and Rebecca Hyer (1825). With Matthew Bevan he owned the ship Herkimer (1801).Also owned a counting house on Chestnut Street. Member of the Whig Party and helped in the inauguration of Harrison, after which he (Harrison only? or Porter too?) died at age of 50. Taken in chains to England when his ship and cargo werecaptured by the British.I need a source for this info. It appears on my copy of the family chart.Married in 1820 or 1830?Sue Lee has portraits of W.A. Porter and his wife.

Leach says Eliza Jones Bertron married "William Porter." No middle initial is cited.

In The Old Merchants of New York City, Walter Barret writes, "Mr. Mathew L. Bevan occupied a seat in the direction of the United Sates Bank, until its downfall; and this position gave him the command of large means and extended influence. His firm for many years, was Bevan & Porter; but Mr. Porter did not sustain a corresponding character to keep up the high respectability of the house, and Mr. May Humphreys was put in his place." The author says they were Philadelphia shipping merchants.
