Jennette was the first of five children born to her parents. Her father, born in Pennsylvania, had come to Ontario, Canada, with his parents some time in the 1840's, where he met and married Jane Thayne, a Scottish immigrant. The family was living in Brantford, Brant County, Ontario, in 1851 where her father was a cooper. The 1851 census records she was born in Townsend, Norfolk County, Canada.

Her parents moved to the Linn County, Iowa, in the early 1850's where her last and youngest brother was born. She lost her mother in 1856. Her father remarried, enlisted in an Iowa regiment and died of disease in a Saint Louis Hospital in 1863. Her husband, George Hickox, was a farmer and a civil war veteran. He died in 1911. He had applied for pension benefits in 1891 and she applied for widow's benefits 6 days after his death.
