One source stated that Thomas was born in Richmond, Nottaway County, Virginia; another stated in Nottaway County, Virginia, near Richmond; other sources stated simply Richmond, Virginia.

Excerpted from a biography in the 1885 History of McDonough County: In early life he studied law and was admitted to the bar. He began the practice of his profession in Kentucky, where he was united in marriage with Mary L. "Threshley", a native of that state.

There is a Kentucky marriage record for Thomas A. Brooking, married on January 22, 1816, in Fayette County, Kentucky, to Mary Louisa Sthreshley. (In 1820 in Fayette County, there was the household of a Thomas Sthreshley.)

Thomas didn't continue his law practice after coming to McDonough County. It is said that he taught school for two years, was engaged in the making of brick north of Macomb, later farmed, then in the spring of 1850 bought and operated a hotel on the west side of Macomb square. Further from his biography, "On his arrival here, the sum total of his earthly goods consisted of a pair of horses, a yoke of cattle, and $25 in money, but being a man of energy, economical and industrious, and a judicious manager, he accumulated a comfortable fortune. He cared nothing for money, except as a means for making his family and others comfortable and happy. He was a true christian, and a member of the M.E. church. He contributed liberally to the support of churches and was ever a friend to the poor and needy."

From genealogical notes on the Brooking Cemetery, now non-existent, this family burial area was located on property owned at one time by the Brooking family in present-day Macomb Township, section 7, west of the Macomb airport. It was sold about 1911. There were, reportedly, about a dozen tombstones, but as of 1975 when these notes were written, there was no trace of them and no common knowledge regarding the disposition of the markers. The notes further state that Thomas was buried on "the old homestead."

However, from an article published in The Macomb Journal, July 20, 1905, the War Department furnished information on the service of Thomas Alexander Brooking, to wit: "Private and sergeant in Captain Edward Johnson's company of volunteer rifleman, 2d Regiment Virginia Militia, commanded successively by Lieutenant Colonel Alexander and Lieutenant Colonel Bown." Burial in Oakwood Cemetery.
