Funeral services for James D. Smith, 91, of Clovis, will be at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, October 1, 2013 in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Rick Raney officiating. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with his grandchildren serving as pallbearers. The family will receive guests at the funeral home on Monday evening, from 6 to 8 P.M.

James Douglas Smith was born Jan. 10, 1922 in Lula, OK to the home of Mary (Trease) and John F. Smith and died Sept. 27, 2013 in Clovis, NM. Mr. Smith grew up on the family farm. During World War II he worked in a ship yard in Richmond, CA. He eventually came back to Oklahoma, and on Jan. 8, 1951 in Ada, OK he was married to Vivian Sandy. Later that same year, they moved to Phoenix, AZ. To their home were born seven children, four sons and three daughters. He and his wife moved to Clovis in June of 2002 to be near two of their sons.

Mr. Smith drove trucks for a local freight company in the Phoenix area for 31½ years , and logged more than two million miles of safe driving. He was a member of the Teamster's Union. He enjoyed watching television, and was a Diamond Backs and Phoenix Suns fan. Mr. Smith was a member of Faith Christian Family Church in Clovis.

He is survived by Vivian, his wife of more than 62 years of Clovis; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Albin and Sandra Smith and Randy and Frankie Smith of Clovis, NM, David and Debbie Smith of Evans, CO and Phillip Smith of Glendale, AZ; two daughters and a son-in-law, Kathy and Roy Grammer of Phoenix, AZ and Sherri Smith of Glendale, AZ; 19 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, A. A. (Bud) Smith and Dowe Smith, three sisters, Babe Kerr, Margie Brooks and Johnnie Richardson, a daughter, Judy Grammer who died in 1997, a daughter-in-law, Sandy Smith who died in 1999 and a great-granddaughter, Haevyn Smith who died in 2009.
