HAMPTON - Rev. Alburtos Horne Sr. went peacefully home to be with Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on May 11, 2003. Rev. Horne was born May 10, 1929, to Evelyn Ross Tucker and Carey Horne in Grimes County, Texas. Upon graduation from high school in Huntsville, Texas, he enlisted in the U.S. Army for three years. He then attended Hampton Institute (University) from 1949 to 1951 where he was on the boxing team and the school newspaper. Rev. Horne met and married Ethel Clarke on Aug. 13, 1953, and worked as a letter carrier for 27 years until retiring from the Hampton Post Office in 1986. He was a thirty-second degree Mason and a Worshipful Grand Master of Zem Temple #122 and a lifetime member of the NAACP. Rev. Horne was licensed to preach the gospel in 1975 and ordained as a Baptist Minister in 1977 by the Rev. Howard Booker at Antioch Baptist Church in Hampton, Va. His involvement with the church included the Male Chorus, Sunday School, and the Men's Star Bible Class. He presently served as a member of the Church of Christ of Hampton. Rev. Horne was preceded in death by his grandmother, Estella Matthews; his daddy, Murray James Tucker Sr.; father, Carey Horne; and brother, Murray James Tucker. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Ethel C. Horne, and nine children, James Flagg (Marie), Albert Horne, Rhonda Reeves (Frank), Michelle Gary (Johnny), Alburtos Horne Jr. (Daphany), Darryl Horne (Charlene), Eric Horne (Renee), Michael Horne, and Alicia Horne; mother, Evelyn Tucker; sisters, Olethia Blanks, Shirley Wallace, Sue Hall and Gwendolyn Horne; brother, Donald Tucker; 28 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; special family friends, Albert Simpson, Gwendolyn Roberts, Rev. Renee Manago and Gus Borrington. Many thanks to the third floor critical care unit nursing staff and doctors and to Ms. Angela Jackson. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday at New Life Church by Bishop Lawrence Lewis. Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens. Rev. Horne will be placed in the church by 9 a.m. Friday. Family and friends will assemble at 2015 Richard Avenue by 10 a.m. Viewing will be from noon to 7 p.m. Thursday at Ronald C. Perkins Funeral Home.
