Mrs. Henrietta Settle Reid, wife of the late distinguished North Carolinian, Governor David S. Reid, died Sunday night at the residence of her son Mr. Thomas S. Reid on East Market street, following an illness with pneumonia.

The funeral service will be conducted at the home of her son this (Tuesday) morning at 11 o'clock. Interment will be made in Greenview cemetery.

Mrs Reid, who was the daughter of Judge Thomas Settle and Henrietta Graves, was bom in Rockingham county, North Carolina, October 7th, 1824. She was educated at Salem Academy, and in 1850 was united in marriage to David Settle Reid, then Representative to Congress and Governor elect of North Carolina.

After his inauguration In 1851, Governor and Mrs. Reid moved to Raleigh, where the first four years of their married life was spent. During the latter part of his term as Governor, Mr. Reid was chosen to represent this State in the United States Senate, and from 1855 to the opening of the Civil War they made their home in Washington, D. C., after which time she and Governor Reid returned to their home on Dan River where ten years were most happily spent.

At the death of their eldest son they moved to Wentworth Courthouse and later to Reidsville, where the past thirty years have been quietly spent at the home of her son Thomas S. Reid.

To this union were given four children, David Settle, Thomas Settle, Caroline Settle and Reuben David Reid. Mr. Thomas S. Reid, of this place, being the only surviving child.

Mrs. Reid was beautiful in face and character and gracious and attractive in manner. She was most charming as the First Lady of the State and a devoted wife and mother. She had a wonderfully clear, well trained mind meeting her husband's colleagues, acquaintances and friends with ease and grace. To the last her mind was clear and acute. She kept fully abreast of the times and was familiar with all current events and important news of the world and its people.

Mrs. Reid was a life long member of the Missionary Baptist church and true to her church, she loved all christian churches. She was equally loyal, true and loving to her family and friends. Indeed, her heart went out in love to all whom she knew. The poor, the needy, those in sorrow as well as those in joy met with a response of sympathy or affection.

Almost her last breath was spent in repeating the XXIII Psalm, and in assurance of her faith In the life beyond the vale.

Truly a consecrated spirit has gone to it's reward.
