Daughter of Ida Jane "Jennie" Hertz Mercer and William D. Mercer of Thorndale, Caln Township, Chester County, PA. She completed public school through the 10th grade. At about age 18 she married Howard Elmer Speakman of Coatesville, b.1897 d. 1944, son of Lewis E. Speakman and Phoebe Eugenia Reynolds Speakman. Naomi and Howard Speakman had two children before divorcing: William Arthur Speakman, b.1919 d.1994, and Lynwood Speakman, b. about 1921 d. about 1923. Naomi lived with her mother and raised her oldest son William at the family home on Lincoln Hwy near the intersection of Marshallton Road in Thorndale, PA. Her son William, his wife Doris Stern Speakman and their son William Arthur Speakman, Jr. all lived together in this household. She, her mother and her daughter-in-law were all active members of the Thorndale Fire Department Auxiliary. She attended Thorndale Methodist Church. The 1940 census lists that she worked as a distributor for a depression era WPA sewing project at age 40. She worked at the Coatesville Hospital in her later years. She died of cancer at age 53. Mrs. Naomi Mercer Speakman, an employee of the Coatesville Veteran's Hospital, died yesterday at her home in Thorndale after a lingering illness. She was 53.

Born in Thorndale, she was a daughter of Ida Jane Mercer and the late William D. Mercer. She belonged to the Thorndale Methodist church, the auxiliary to the Thorndale Fire Company and the auxiliary to the Eagle Lodge of Coatesville.

She is survived, in addition to her mother, by a son, William A. Speakman of Thorndale; a grandson, and a sister, Mrs. Myrtle Vanore of Philadelphia.

MERCER-SPEAKMAN- Of Thorndale, on Thursday, June 11, 1953, Naomi Mercer Speakman, in her 54th year.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral from the Archie S. Maclean's Funeral Home, 5th Ave. & Lincoln Hwy., Coatesville, on Monday, June 15, at 1 p.m. DST.

Interment Green Mount Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday evening.
