He was born on July 23, 1911 to Benjamin "Ben" Clarence Amberman, 1865-1928, and Harriet "Hattie" Abrams Amberman, 1871-1911 in Springfield Gardens, Queens, New York. He married Dorothy Grum, 1908-2007, in 1931 at Jamaica, Queens, New York. They had four children: Benjamin Douglas, Leonard Grum, 1944-1996, Dorothy Joan and Leigh Amberman.
Benjamin and his brother Clarence were both buried at sea and the tombstone at Greenfield Cemetery has a centograph showing "buried at sea."
His obituary notice is as follows: AMBERMAN--Ben on Nov. 13, 1978 of Seaford (owner of Amber Novelties and M. V. O. Cunningham Garage, Queens). Beloved husband of Dorothy.
