The former Doris Mertens was born on June 26, 1930 in Kiel, Wisconsin, daughter of the late Clemens and Marie (Menne) Mertens. She entered the Convent in 1944 and professed her vows in 1948. Sister Doris Mertens served as a homemaker at San Xavier School, Tucson, San Jose, Pisinemo, Arizona, St. Willibrord Convent, Chicago, Illinois, St. Anne, Francis Creek, Catholic Memorial Convent, Waukesha, Holy Family Convent, Manitowoc, Sacred Heart Seminary, Oneida, Wisconsin. She also served as a teacher aide at St. Joseph, Green Bay, St. Mary, Kaukauna, Wisconsin, St. John's, Komatke, Arizona and cared for pre-school children at South Day Care Center, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After retiring from active ministry, she performed a variety of services for the Sisters at Holy Family Convent. Since 1999, she has been residing at St. Rita Health Center at the Motherhouse. She is a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity.
Survivors include the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity; three sisters and one brother-in-law: Sister Mary Jane Mertens, Manitowoc, Jeanette Hanson, Milwaukee, Kathryn & Edward Shumaker, Waukegan, Illinois; and two brothers and three sisters-in-law: James & Irene Mertens, Kiel, Clemens & Patricia Mertens, Oneida, and Winifred Mertens, New Holstein. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at Holy Family Convent Chapel, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Placid Stroik, OFM with burial at Holy Family Convent Cemetery, Manitowoc.
The family will greet relatives and friends at Holy Family Convent, Manitowoc, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m Tuesday, (TODAY), June 11, 2013. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the Holy Family Convent Chapel.
The Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
