Sister Mary Jane Mertens, 93, a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity, died Saturday evening, Aug. 18, 2018, at Holy Family Convent, Manitowoc.

The former Mary Jane Mertens was born on Sept. 4, 1924, in Kiel, daughter of the late Clemens and Marie (Menne) Mertens.

She entered the Convent in 1938 and professed her vows in 1943.

Sister Mary Jane earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Holy Family College, Manitowoc, Wisconsin, a Master’s Degree in Mathematics from the University of Santa Clara, Santa Clara, California and a Master’s Degree in Pastoral Studies from Loyola University, New Orleans, Louisiana.

Sister Mary Jane served as an elementary teacher at Holy Innocents, Manitowoc; St. Mary, Kaukauna; St. Mary, Waukesha; and St. Anne, Francis Creek, all in Wisconsin; St. John, Menominee, Michigan; St. Anthony, Topawa, Arizona; and St. John Vianney, Kailua, Hawaii. She also taught high school at Holy Family, Lindsay, Nebraska; Catholic Memorial, Waukesha, Wisconsin; St. John, Kamatke, and Sells High School, Sells, both in Arizona. Sister Mary Jane also tutored at San Xavier, Tucson, Arizona and ministered in parishes in various roles at Menominee Catholic Central, Menominee, Michigan; Our Lady of Peace Cathedral, Honolulu, and St. Theresa, Kekaha, both of Hawaii; and St. Francis of Assisi, Greenwood, Mississippi.

She also helped with various tasks at Holy Family Convent. Since 2010, Sister Mary Jane had been a member of St. Rita Health Center, Manitowoc. She is a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity.

Survivors include the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity; her siblings, James (Irene) Mertens, Clemens (Patricia) Mertens, Edward (Kitty) Shumaker; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clemens and Marie (Menne) Merten; and her siblings, Leo (Faye) Mertens, Francis (Louise) Mertens, Ralph (Jeanette) Hanson, Robert (Winifred) Mertens, Raymond (Mary) Mertens, John Mertens and Sister Doris Mertens.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 23 at Holy Family Convent Chapel, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Hilary Brzezinski, OFM with burial at Holy Family Convent Cemetery, Manitowoc. The family will greet relatives and friends at Holy Family Convent, Manitowoc, from 4 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 22. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. at Holy Family Convent Chapel. The visitation will continue Thursday morning from 8: until 10 a.m.
