He was born January 27, 1915 in the Town of New Holstein, son of the late Clemens and Marie (Menne) Mertens.
Leo was a 1933 graduate of Kiel High School.
On August 30, 1939 he married Fay Olmsted at Ss Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Kiel.
Leo had worked at AA Laun Furniture in Kiel for many years retiring in 1977.
He was a member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Kiel and the Holy Name Society as well as the Catholic Order of Foresters. He also was a lifetime member of the Kiel Fish and Game, a former member of the Kiel area school board and a member of the Kiel Fire Department for 67 years, holding the office of Treasure for 38 of those years. He retired from active service with the Fire Department with the rank of Captain.
Leo enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, fishing, hunting, attending and watching Packer games, the Thursday morning bowling league and visiting the farm.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Fay of Kiel; three children, William (Audrey) Mertens, Eileen (David) Walsdorf and Peter (Judy) Mertens, all of Kiel; six grandchildren, Amy (Scott) Spielmann, New Berlin, Nicholas Mertens, Kiel, Paula (Ron) See, Chilton, Penny (Ron) Knapp, Stevens Point, Lucas Mertens, Kiel and Michael Mertens, Milwaukee. He is further survived by six great-grandchildren, Robbie Spielmann, Isabelle See, Leo, Elena, Audrey and Erin Knapp; three brothers, Robert (Winnie) Mertens, New Holstein, James (Irene) Mertens, Kiel, Clem (Pat) Mertens, Oneida; four sisters, Jeanette Hanson, Milwaukee, Sr. Mary Jane Mertens, Manitowoc, Sr. Doris Mertens, Manitowoc, Kitty (Ed) Schumaher, Waukegan, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, mother and father-in-law, Henry and Hilda Olmsted; three brothers, Francis, John and Ray Mertens; one brother-in-law, Gordon Olmsted; and two sisters-in-law, Louise and Mary Mertens.
The funeral Mass for Leo will be celebrated Thursday, March 25, 2010 at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Kiel with Rev. Loren Nys S.D.S. and Joe Zenk, Parish Director, officiating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery.
