Edward D. Gaughan died suddenly March 6, 2009, due to acute Leukemia. He died at home surrounded by his wife, children and grandchildren. Ed was born in Reading, Kansas, January 30, 1931, to Edward James Gaughan and Marie (Supple) Gaughan. He graduated from Emporia State Teachers College receiving Bachelors and Masters Degrees. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. Ed returned to school and completed a PhD in Mathematics at the University of Kansas and then served as a Professor of Mathematics at New Mexico State University from 1960 until his retirement in 1991. He was the author of numerous college level mathematics textbooks. Ed married Lea Haag in 1953 before taking his position at NMSU. The two celebrated their fifty-sixth wedding anniversary this past February. They raised their eight children in Mesilla, New Mexico. Family and friends fondly remember Ed's jovial sense of humor, finding joy in all people, life in general, and especially in his large family. Ed is survived by his wife Lea Gaughan, and children Eve Gaughan, David Gaughan, Jerald Gaughan, Michael Gaughan, Anne Perez, Sister Gabriel Mary (Jean Gaughan), Mary Ersinghaus, and Patrick Gaughan. Sons and daughters-in-law are Tami Gaughan, Ida Gaughan, Alfred Perez, Joe Ersinghaus, and Aleece Gaughan. The grandchildren are Batina Gaughan, Briann Gaughan, Logan Gaughan, Henry Gaughan, Joshua Perez and wife Emily Perez, Jessica Perez, Ariel Perez, Mary Grace Perez, Daniel Perez, Anne Ersinghaus, Erin Ersinghaus, Paul Gaughan, Amelia Gaughan, Claire Gaughan, Susan Gaughan, and great-grandchild Olivia Perez. He is also survived by his sister Mary Wellnitz and her family. A memorial service will take place Wednesday March 11, 2009 at 2 PM at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral. The rite of committal will take place at another date in Kansas. In honor of Ed's desire for the education of our youth, a scholarship fund has been established. Fund contributions can be made to the Edward D. Gaughan Memorial Scholarship Fund at First American Bank, 1553 Avenida de Mesilla, P.O. Box 2380, Las Cruces, NM 88004. .
