He was the son of Richard and Selina (Woods) Darrington.

Nellie's father was George Richard Earl (born 31 Oct 1860 Dresbach, Winona County, Minnesota; died 22 Apr 1928 Libertyville, Illinois). Her mother was Elizabeth Jane Black (born Sep 1866 Little Valley, Minnesota; died 8 Nov 1945 Wilmot, South Dakota; daughter of Reuben and Susan Minerva (Moore) Black). George and Elizabeth married 29 April 1885 Milbank, Grant County, South Dakota.

George Richard Earl's parents were Elisha Earl (born about 1840; died between 1864 and 1872 at Dresbach, Winona County, Minnesota) and Martha Jane Doughty (born 1844 near Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana; died 26 March 1907 at Milbank, Grant County, South Dakota). Elisha and Martha Jane married about 1859 at Dresbach.

Tradition: The Earls were of Irish descent, emigrating from Ireland to North Carolina and thence to Minnesota.

Somersham was formerly in Huntingdonshire. Parish church is in Isle of Ely Diocese.
