J.W. "Jay" Furgeson departed this life on August 29, 2008. He was born September 8, 1927 in Becton to Ray and Elizabeth (Reid) Furgeson. Jay attended Becton and Idalou schools. He married Mary Boyd on October 5, 1947; she preceded him in death on April 10, 1996. Jay married Hattie Jane Townsend on September 6, 1997.

J.W. was a long time resident of the Becton community and a farmer and rancher for 61 years. Jay also raised Appaloosa and Quarter horses. He also roped for 30 years and was a member of the Idalou Roping Club. His devotion was to the stewardship of his family, the soil, and his livestock.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Hattie; two daughters, Debbie Lewis and husband Wade from Hereford; Ann Lisemby and husband Steve of New Home; one stepdaughter, Lady Shae McCauley and husband Erie of Idalou; two sons, Mike Furgeson of Becton; Eddy Furgeson and wife Cindy of Idalou; and Bobby Ray "Butch" Furgeson (deceased); one brother, Donald Furgeson and wife Nell of Lubbock; two sisters, Mary Lynn Moret and husband Henry of Becton; Betty Smith and husband Smitty of Columbus, Ga.; and his aunt, Zelta Hess and husband, Dr. Wallace Hess of Lubbock. Jay also had 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday, September 1, 2008 in the Fellowship Hall of the First United Methodist Church in Idalou. Celebration of Life service will follow at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Idalou with Jim Ried officiating and Terry Brown assisting. Interment will follow at the Becton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like to request that donations be made to the Meals on Wheels to the Idalou United Methodist Church.

Arrangements are under the personal care of White Funeral Home in Idalou.
