Mary Estelle Holbert was born on September 17, 1873 in Pennsylvania. She was the second born child and first daughter of Hezekiah Holbert and Fannie A.Bowen.

Mary had an older brother, Robert Conkling Holbert, 1871-1944, and four younger sisters and two younger brothers. Her younger sisters were Emma Holbert, who dies at 4 months of age, Helen Mary Holbert, 1882-1966, Winifred Holbert 1884-1974, Helen Holbert born in 1885. Her younger brothers were Edward Bowen Holbert, Sr. and James W. Holbert.

Mary was born in Pennyslvania and was baptized at the age of one in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne, Pennsylvania according to Pennyslvania Church and Town Records. The record says she was baptized in the home of her parents, Hezekiah and Fannie by someone from St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. The document also indicates that Mary Bowen, Fannie's mother was at the baptism.

The 1880 census shows Mary living in Wiliamsport, Lycoming, Pennsylvania at 53 Uffin Vine Street with her father, mother her two brothers Robert and Edward and a servant.

The 1900 census shows her living at 659 Summit Avenue in St. Paul, Minnesota with her father, her mother, her brothers Edward and James and her sisters, Helen and Winifred, her grandmother, Martha and three servants. She was 27 years old at the time.

On November 11, 1903, in St. Paul, MN, Mary married John Norman Risley according to marriage document FHL film number 1313335.

Mary died on December 14, 1915 at 42 years, 3 months and 5 days of age in New Bedford, MA. According to her death certificate, Mary died from Nephritis, Chronic interastitial, cystitis, endocarditis, and an embolism. Her death certificate indicates that she was a housewife at the time of her death. Mary's body was creamated and her ashes are in a vault in Block one, Lot 27, E5, N1.5 in Oakland Cemetery in St. Paul, MN.

Mary's ashes were originally buried in a rural tomb somewhere in New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts. Mary's ashes were then brought to St. Paul, Minnesota and interred in Oakland Cemetery on May 3, 1917. Mary is buried in a plot with her sister, Winifred, her grandmother, Martha and two infant nephews.
