CHURCH LEADER DIES AT FINLEY
Mrs. Henrietta C. Kiesel Sick for Three Months
Mrs. Henrietta Coates Kiesel, 79, of 245 Fremont Avenue, owner of the F.W. Coates insurance agency and the widow of George W. Kiesel, died in Finley Hospital at 5:10 Wednesday morning after an illness of three months. She was the last member of one of Dubuque's most prominent pioneer families.
The body is lying in state at St. Luke's Methodist Church, where friends may call. Funeral services will be held at the church at 11 o'clock Thursday morning. Burial will be in Rockdale Cemetery. The Egelhof funeral home is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Dubuque
Mrs. Kiesel was born Jan. 1, 1868, the daughter of William and Frances Waller Coates. Her maternal grandfather, Robert Waller, was one of the group of English settlers who came here in 1834, one year after the first permanent settlement of Dubuque and lived at Rockdale, then known as Catfish. Her paternal grandfather was Thomas Coates, who also came here from England, reaching Dubuque in 1842.
She was a graduate of Dubuque High School and later entered Duncan and Waller office here, where she was associated with her uncle, John Robert Waller. She was married to George William Kiesel in 1901, and he died in 1924.
After the death of Mrs. Kiesel's brother, Frank W. Coates, in 1939, she succeeded him as head of the F.W. Coates insurance agency, which position she maintained until her death.
Active in St. Luke's
Mrs. Kiesel was long active in St. Luke's Methodist Church, in which she held many positions. At her death, she was a member of the official board of the church, chairman of social service and treasurer of the Sunday school, and church leaders give her credit for the development of the St. Luke's Sunday school. Mrs. Kiesel was well known in Methodist circles throughout Iowa.
Mrs. Kiesel was active in civic affairs. She was one of the original founders of Visiting Nurses association, and was largely responsible for the inauguration of the summer camp for underprivileged children. She was also a member of Finley hospital auxillary and had a major role in placing The Hillcrest Baby fold under the sponsorship of the Methodist church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, three sisters and four brothers.
Because of Mrs. Kiesel's death, the regular Lenten dinner and worship service scheduled at St. Luke's church Wednesday evening has been cancelled, the Rev. Ronald Terry, pastor, announced Wednesday.
