A CRUSHING BLOW
The Death of John Edgar Coates
Relentless death came last night a second time to the home of William Coates. Three months ago he knocked at the same door and the body of brave Rob Coates was borne to its last resting place. The whole community knew and sympathized with him in his suffering and when he died the sorrow was universal. But now the bereaved family is stricken with a double affliction. Last night at 10 o'clock occurred the death of John Edgar Coates. He was in his seventeenth year -- a manly, generous hearted boy, the pride of his parents. Last Friday he was taken sick at school. He was brought home and since Monday has been confined to his bed. The disease developed into peritonitis and despite the efforts of the physicians, his condition rapidly grew worse. Edgar was in the high school, where he was popular with both teachers and pupils.
It is a time for the most tender sympathy. Every heart must be touched and every head bowed in the presence of a death so sad.
The funeral notice will be found in another column.

Edgar Coates, son of Alderman Coates, died at 10 o'clock last night at the residence of his parents, near Grandview avenue. He was taken ill on Friday last, and in the course of two or three days his illness developed into inflammation of the bowels an notwithstanding he had the best of medical skill and attention, the disease could not be checked. Edgar was the second son of Mr. Coates and was 16 years of age. He was born, reared, and educated in Dubuque, and was a fine-looking young man, being about six feet in height. He was naturally smart and intelligent, and had a future before him that was full of promise. His death, followed so closely upon that of their other son, Robert, will fall with crushing effect upon his now doubly bereaved parents, to whom in their sore affliction the sympathy of all will go out. Edgar wasa a favorite of all who knew him, and especially so with the young people, and by all he was highly esteemed.
