Richard Thomas Berry was the son of Sarah Anne Suydam and Richard Beverly Berry, and grandson of Peggy Suydam, Rev. James Suydam, Mehitable Rew Berry, and Richard Thomas Berry.

He was born in Hyde County on September 16, 1832. He died of consumption (tuberculosis) at age 43 November 6, 1875.

He married in Craven Co., NC, March 10, 1857, Mary Francis White, daughter of Mary Cassandra and Whichcote C. White of Craven County.

Richard was listed in the 1850 US Census in New Bern, NC, in the household of his uncle Rev. James Suydam, 38; Sarah Suydam, 40; Alexander Suydam, 3; R. Berry, 18; James Berry, 16; and Jno Ball, 20; all born in NC.

They were listed in the 1860 US Census in New Bern, Craven Co., NC, as R.T. Berry, 27; Mary F. Berry, 21; Edward F. Berry, 2; Sarah A. Berry, 0; W.C. White, 67; Casandra White, 59; and James W. Cox, 45; all born in NC.

They lived in Graham, Alamance Co., NC, for a few years before returning to New Bern.

They were listed in the 1870 US Census in New Bern, Craven Co., NC, as Richard T. Berry, 34, Mayor of New Bern; Mary F. Berry, 32; Edward T. Berry, 12; Mary Berry, 5; Florence Berry, 3; Margaret Forbes, 22, Domestic Servant; Susan Forbes, 15, Domestic Servant; all born in NC.

Richard Thomas Berry was commissioned as a Captain on January 20, 1862 in the Athens Guard, a militia unit in New Bern. His grave site has one of the Athens Guard markers at the foot of his casket.

He became involved in politics and was elected some time after the Civil War ended as New Bern's youngest mayor. He was listed in the 1870 US Census in New Bern as the mayor and was serving as New Bern's mayor at the time of his death in 1875.
