This is William James Baxley of Hemingway, Barnwell County, South Carolina, father of John Christopher Baxley of Hawthorne, Alachua County, Florida. His unmarked grave was thought to have been a "Bailey" by mistake for years. My brother Eugene Baxley discovered the mistake and got a correction in the record & this marker.

After John Baxley died, William's mother Charlotte married a James Altman who had previously served in the War of 1812. After Altman died in about 1848, she is shown in this 1850 census living next door to William James and his wife Sarah and their children.

Application for pension by William's mother Charlotte when her last husband James Altman died in about 1848, but there is no date on the application that I can see. She was then seen in the 1850 census living next door to William James Baxley and wife Sarah with their children.

A deed showing the parents of William James Baxley (W. J. Baxley) with his siblings names. After John's death, Charlotte remarried to a James Altman who had served in the War of 1812, and died about 1848 we think, so her last name in the deed was Altman.

About 9 months after this deed, William James died in Richmond, VA during the Civil War. (L. D. was Leonard Dozier and S. A. was Sarah Ann who married Thompson.)
