Terrible Accident at Norfolk
Jerry Reagan, Jr., Accidentally Shoots Himself. His Aged Mother Expires On Hearing The News.
Norfolk, NY, March 12- Early Saturday morning or village was shocked by the news that Jerry Reagan, Jr., proprietor of the Grove House, had accidentally shot himself. No one knows just how the accident happened, but it is supposed to have been like this: On Saturday morning Mr. Reagan arose as usual and taking his milk pail went to the barn to attend to the morning work. After having finished, it is supposed he started to return to the house bringing with him a rifle, belonging to Mr. Locke, one of his boarders, which had been left out in the grain box. In some way the trigger caught on something and the gun was discharged, the ball entering the left side of his stomach and passing upward through the heart, lodged in his left shoulder killing him instantly. When breakfast was ready, Mr. Reagan not having returned from the barn, his oldest son, Floyd, went out to call him and found him lying where he had fallen, dead. He quickly returned to the house and getting help, returned and carried his father into the house, after which, physicians were called and Coroner Smith, of Winthrop, notified. On his arrival the coroner rendered a verdict f accidental death, and no inquest was held. When the news was broken to Mr. Reagan's aged mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Reagan, Sr., who live near Knapps Station on a farm, Mrs. Reagan fell into the arms of her son, James, who was trying to tell her as gently as possible, and died almost instantly of heart failure. She was a very old lady of eighty years or over and the shock was to much for her. Her husband, at this writing , is bracing up manfully for one of his advanced age and under double load of sorrow. Mr. Reagan leaves a wife and six children to mourn his untimely death, besides his aged father, brothers and sisters and numerous other relatives, all of whom have the heartfelt sympathy of their friends and acquaintances in their hour of trial. Mr. Reagan's funeral was held at 10am and that of his mother this, Tuesday, morning at 10am. High Mass was celebrated at both funerals by Rev. Father Manning. Interment at the Norfolk R.C. Cemetery.
