The first person buried in Chessor Cemetery was James Chessor, son of Samuel Chessor and Evaline Coble, who died at the age of 14 years on July 24, 1857. After a hunting excursion during which he killed his first squirrel, James became deathly ill. From his death bed, James could see the large oak tree on top of the ridge in which he had killed his squirrel. At his request, he was buried near this tree.

This marker was purchased by James E. "Uncle Jim" Chessor and Sam Bates. Jim and Sam, along with Elmer Chandler, Dave Chessor, Grady Barber, Sid O'Guin, Jim Brown and W.W. Pollock (of W.W. Pollock Monument Company of Lewis County, Tennessee) placed the marker on February 23, 1945.
