Rosa was the daughter of Samuel Chessor and Evaline Coble, and the wife of G. Elvin Johnston. Rosa and Elvin had four children: Thomas, Lillie, Walter, and Eliza.

According to her death certificate she was born in 1863; however, her headstone lists her date of birth as 1865. She passed away from cerebral softening.
