He served in the U.S. Navy from 1967 to 1971 and was stationed at Cam Ranh Bay in the Republic of Vietnam. He was a founding member of the South Carolina Vietnam Veterans and Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 303, and he was a member of American Legion Post #6. He was instrumental in the design and construction of the S.C. Vietnam Veterans Memorial and in the creation of Memorial Park in Columbia, SC.
He graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1974 and from the USC School of Law in 1978. He practiced as an Attorney for the State of South Carolina and most recently was engaged in private practice. He was a member of Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church.
Services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, June 23, 2008 in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia. Officiating will be Rev. Kenneth Barwick and Rev. Larry Hays. Burial will follow in Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church Cemetery with military honors.
