"Orland Unit-Register" (Orland, California) Thursday, 22 March 1962:

William A. Amort Dies Suddenly at Home, Rites Today

Funeral services were held at 10 this morning in St. Dominic's Catholic Church for William Anthony Amort, who died of a heart attack Monday evening at his home here. The Rev. Fr. Thomas Boland conducted the services, which were followed by interment in the Catholic cemetery. Fellow members of the Knights of Columbus served as pall bearers. Rosary services were held last night at 8:30 in the Sweet chapel here, with a special service conducted by the Knights of Columbus following at 8:45.
Amort returned from work to his home at 810 Papst Ave., Monday evening, in apparently good health. He read the paper until called to dinner by his sister, Mrs. Agnes Dyas, and had just started the evening meal when he coughed a couple of times. Mrs. Dyas went around the table to his chair to aid him and found life was already extinct. He had been under the care of Dr. Fred B. Ely, and Dr. Ely was called immediately and pronounced him dead.
Amort was born at Salem, Ore., Jan. 22, 1903, and came to Orland as a young boy when his parents bought ranch property west of town and the family moved here. He had been a resident of this community ever since.
He had been a part owner of the Richelieu here for more than 25 years, and sole owner for the past year. He had also developed a large ranch west of Orland, which he later sold. He was a popular figure in the business life of the community, and known for many benefactions made quietly to people in need. He was a devout member of his church throughout his life, and active in its work.
He is survived by his sisters, Mrs. Agnes Dyas of Orland and Mrs. Roy Merrill of Hillsboro, Ore., and a brother, Herman, of Salem, Ore., and a nephew living at Eugene, Ore., and a niece of Salem. - Transcribed by M.
