F. Amort Loses Life In Tractor Accident

Frank P. Amort, 39, prominent Orland rancher, was drowned last Wednesday morning when his tractor tipped over backwards and pinned him in two feet of water in a slough on his ranch southwest of town. Amort's body was not recovered until it had been in the water over two hours.
The accident occurred shortly after nine in the morning while Amort was pulling trees on his place. He had been working on one side of the slough and crossed to complete the job. The tractor had to climb quite a hill and suddenly tipped over backwards as it left the water in the slough, pinning Amort beneath it in the water.
John Schorer, working with Amort rushed to his rescue and tried to free him. Unable to do that he tried to hold Amort's head out of water but the pool was too deep. He then rushed for help and James Bayliss and C.E. Cunningham rushed to the rescue and Walter Hicks was called from town. Nearly two hours were necessary to free Amort's body and he evidently had died shortly after the accident.
Amort was born in Minnesota and had made his home here for twenty years, coming from Oregon to Orland. He is survived by his father, Frank Amort, Sr., three sisters, Sister Mary and Sister Edith of Mount Angel, Oregon, Mrs. Agnes Fluer of Oakland, and three brothers, Charles of Shaw, Oregon, Herman of Salem, Oregon, and William of Orland. His mother passed away suddenly on October 5th of last year.
Funeral service will be held Saturday morning at nine at the St. Dominic's Catholic church. A rosary will be held at 7:30 Friday evening at the Hicks & Chaney funeral chapel. - Transcribed by M.
