John McKinney was the son of Daniel McKinney (Donald McInnish Jr.) b. 15 Sep 1742 in Albemarle Parish, Surry Co., VA d. 03 Jan 1837 in Monroe Co. MS, and Sarah Weathers. He had the following siblings: Mary "Polly" who married Archibald Murphy, Nancy who married William Crowder; Sarah who married Richard Horn, William who married Amy Dugger; Rebekah who married George Julian II; Jesse who married Elizabeth Masters; Seth who married Elizabeth Kennedy, and James who married Susan Sheppard.

He married on Mar 13, 1802 in York Co., SC, Nancy Horn (buried at this cem.) b. abt 1781-90 in Edgecombe Co., NC, d. 22 Mar 1833 in Roane Co., TN, daughter of Abisha Horn & Ann Ricks. Between 1790-1800, they moved to Roane Co., TN, and settled on a point known as Indian Bottom, across the Clinch river from the present-day-Oakridge K25 Plant. John and Nancy had the following children: (1) Ananias (buried at this cem.) b. 1 Dec 1805 d. 31 Dec 1822 who married Elizabeth Howard b. 14 Feb 1811 d. 8 Sep 1892; (2) James McKinney b. 1809 who married Sarah "Jincy" and moved to KS; (3) Jesse McKinney b. 1808 m. 24 Feb 1829 in Roane Co., TN, Matilda Harvey; (4) Elisha McKinney b. 5 Aug 1810 in Roane Co., TN, d. 25 Sep 1857 in Roane Co., TN, m. Mary Howard b. 8 Nov 1810 d 23 Sep 1857 (both died in a typhoid epidemic and are buried at this cem.); (5) Rebeccah b. Oct 23 1812 d. Jul 02, 1885 who married James Iving/Irwin/Ervin; Nancy g. Aug 12, 1815 in Roane Co., TN d. Jun 10, Rusk, Cherokee Co., TX, who married John Francis; and Sarah McKinney b. Mar 30, 1818 d, Oct 28, Rush, Cherokee Co., TX who married James Francis.

They purchased 250 acres known as "Indian Bottoms" for $550 from Jeremiah McClain on the south side of the Clinch River on 2 Apr 1802. John was listed in the 1802 Militia of Roane Co., TN, with Capt. Hugh Francis' Co; he signed a petition in 1801 to form Roane Co., TN. John's wife Nancy rode over the mountains on an old gray horse, carrying their few household good wrapped in a homespun sheet.
