His name was also Donald called Daniel, was christened 3 October 1742.

His father Donald (Daniel) McInnish, Sr, whose descendants bear the name McKinney, is the earliest known member of the family to immigrate to America from Islay, Scotland in the early 1700's. It is believed that he came to America between 1738 and 1740 with a group of Argyleshire families belonging to the Scottish Presbyterian Church by invitation of the Provincial Governor of the New York Colony.

The McKinneys were a sept of the clan McKinnon in Scotland. No reason has been established for changing the name from McInnish to McKinney, but this the descendants did as early as 1778 when Donald McInnish Jr. signed a deed "McKinney" in Franklin County, North Carolina.

Daniel McKinney, Jr., married Sarah Weathers, daughter of William and Mary Rives Weathers. They lived in Virginia (Surry and Sussex Counties), North Carolina (Franklin, Mecklenburg and Rutherford Counties), South Carolina (York County) and, after Sarah's death, he lived & died in Mississippi (Monroe County). Daniel came to North Carolina around 1777. He bought land in Bute County and Franklin County, NC, according to the land records of these counties.
He served as a private in the Continental Army in the Revolutionary War from North Carolina and received a land grant In 1823, in the Northern part of Alabama (Huntsville Meridian) (later known as the Mississippi Territory) for his service in the Revolution. He served in the campaign at Valley Forge and was wounded several times. His son William also served as a substitute for his father according to the Pension Files of the US government.

Daniel & Sarah's first four children were born in Virginia. They moved to North Carolina about 1777 where other children were born. Two of these North Carolina sons wound up in Monroe County, Mississippi, although they lived some years in Grainger County, Tennessee, (near present day Knoxville) before taking the final step.

Daniel McKinney, apparently a widower in 1819, sold his land in Rutherford County, NC, then went to Roane Co., TN, and made his way to Monroe County, Mississippi, to join his sons James and Jesse, who had already moved there. Since he is not shown in the 1820 census in either Rutherford County, NC, or Monroe County, MS, it is assumed that he was en route during census taking time. In 1827, he made a will in Athens, Mississippi. The will was probated in Monroe County, MS, in 1835 and can be found in Will Book 1 at pages 24 & 25. He died in Monroe County in 1835 at the age of 93, but his grave has not been located. He apparently lived his last year in the home of his granddaughter Mary McKinney Carter (daughter of Jesse) and her husband, Meredith Carter.
