John was the sixth of ten children of William Whitman and Christiana Steckel Whitman.

He resided in Tinicum Twp., Bucks Co., Pennsylvania.

John drowned, aged 12 years, 5 months, 5 days, in the Canal near Mauch Chunk. The town has since been re-named Jim Thorpe, after the famous Olympian. As John's father was a canal boatman, it seems that this tragedy may have occurred while John was helping his father during summer vacation.

He was listed in the burial records of St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church, where his parents worshipped.
