The last surviving link with the original pioneer settlers of New Prague was severed on June 26 by the death of Sister M. Hedwig, O.S.F., in St. Joseph’s Convent, Campbellsport, Wisconsin, where she had been living in retirement for a decade or more. Her father, Anton Philipp, was the first settler to establish a claim in what was later to become the City of New Prague, then a frontier in the “Big Woods” of this area. Born on January 17, 1867, to Anton and Clara Yackly Philipp. Sister Hedwig was baptized the next day with the name “Elizabeth” and with Mathias and Elizabeth Yackly as sponsors. She was the last surviving child of the pioneer Philipp family. Sister Hedwig had observed her 75th anniversary as a Franciscan nun two years ago. Her last visit to New Prague was on August 15, 1957, when she took part in the “Sisters’ Day” observance for School Sisters of St. Francis who were from New Prague.
