Blanche Watson Johnston, 102, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at Elizabeth House.
She was a daughter of the late Edward Lafayette Watson and Francelia Boget Watson, born July 29, 1897, on the family homestead near Searsboro, Iowa. She obtained her teaching certificate at Cedar Falls Teacher's College in 1915 and taught grades 1-8 in a one-room schoolhouse. In 1918, she went to Washington, D.C., where she worked in the Treasury Department. Later she lived in Illinois for many years before moving to Hendersonville in 1995.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Hazel Lorene Tish, and her brother, Marvin Bryan Watson.
She is survived by three sons, Darryl P. Johnston and his wife, Gwen, of Hendersonville, Wayne E. Johnston and his wife, Genevieve, of Glen Ellyn, Ill., and Verle L. Johnston and his wife, Joan, of Goode, Va; two daughters, Phyllis L. Johnston and her husband, Dan, of Southern Pines and Marjorie F. Worniak (wife of the late Edward Wozniak) of Highland, Texas; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; two nieces; and a nephew.
A graveside service was held Tuesday at Pisgah Gardens with the Rev. Andy Robinson officiating."
