James[Jacob] F. Early, aged 81 years, died at 1:40 p.m. yesterday at the home of his son, Policeman W. C. Early, East Market Street, where he had made his home for the past four years. He had been in feeble health for the past 4 or 5 years and was critically ill for the past three weeks.
Mr. Early, a son of the late Abraham and Annie Early, was born and reared at Pleasant Run, now Rockingham P. O. About twenty years of his life was spent in Kansas, Ohio, West Virginia and Prince William County. He returned to Rockingham County about 1870. He resided in Harrisonburg for ten years, prior to moving on a farm near Massanetta Springs, where he lived until four years ago. He was a lifelong member of the Church of the Brethren.
Residing in Ohio at the outbreak of the Civil War, Mr. Early enlisted in the Union Army, serving throughout the war. After his discharge in 1866, Mr. Early was united in marriage to the first of his three wives. She was Miss Mollie Allison of Lima, Ohio, and she died about 1879.
His second wife was Miss Annie Secrist of near Harrisonburg and she died in 1908.His third wife, Mrs. Emma Showalter Whitesel, whom he married in 1908, died four years ago.
Three sons, W. C. Early, of Harrisonburg,; U. F. Early, Toledo, Ore., and B. F. Early, of Santelle, Cal.: one sister, Mrs. Abraham Miller, of Pleasant Valley; and four brothers – John and Isaac Early of Norman, Mo., Michael G. of Nokesville, and Jonas of Pleasant Valley survive. He also leaves 17 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Unless word is received from relatives in the West, funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock from the Harrisonburg Church of the Brethren, Rev. Chas. Long and Rev. W. W. Hamilton, officiating. The party will leave the home of W. C. Early at two o’clock. Interment will be in Woodbine Cemetery.
Pallbearers – Benjamin and Samuel Moyers, Frank and Luther Miller and Abraham and Claude Early, nephews of the deceased.
Flower Girls - Ethel Myers, Vada Lineweaver and Ellie, Mary, Lillian and Elizabeth Early.
