Tec5 Orville Ralph Vanderpool was a paratrooper from Co. I, 3rd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, being transported on board a C-47A Skytrain (#42-100905) from the 95th Troop Carrier Squadron, 440th Troop Carrier Group, 50th Troop Carrier Wing, IX Troop Carrier Command, 9th Air Force, being flown to Drop Zone D in the early-morning hours of Jun. 6, 1944, in support of the D-Day landings. The transport, code-named Chalk 15, was brought down by German anti-aircraft fire west of Magneville with the loss of Vanderpool, the other 17 paratroopers from his battalion and the transport's 4-man crew.

He is memorialized here with along with the other 17 paratroopers on board the transport, the transport's 4-man crew, and 6 men killed in a separate Allied bomber crash on Jun. 10, 1944. He is buried in Coop Prairie Cemetery in Mansfield, Arkansas. (Link to his Find-A-Grave memorial.)
