This transport was shot down by German anti-aircraft fire during the early morning hours of the D-Day invasion on Jun. 6, 1944. It crashed in the field located behind the memorial, killing the 4-man crew and all 18 paratroopers from Company I, 3rd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, who were in transit to their drop zone.
* A B-26C Marauder (#42-107574), from the 496th Bombardment Squadron, 344th Bombardment Group (Medium), IX Bomber Command, 9th Air Force. After dropping its payload on its target, the bomber was on its way back to base. It was brought down by German anti-aircraft fire on Jun. 10, 1944, near Magneville with the loss of its 6-man crew.
Plaques for each downed aircraft, listing the names of all killed in each crash, were unveiled at a re-dedication ceremony in June 2003.
There are no actual burials at this site. With the exception of one paratrooper for whom no remains were recovered or identified, all were either buried in U.S. military cemeteries in Europe or had their remains repatriated at war's end for re-interment in the United States.
