Playwright. He was an American playwright from the 18th century. He was the author of "The Prince of Parthia," the first play written by an American to be professionally produced on stage on April 24, 1767 in the colonies. Educated at home and at the Philadelphia Academy, he was colleagues of painters and poets. His father was one of the original members of the American Philosophical Society, which was organized by the American Founding Father, Benjamin Franklin. Besides plays, he published poems. He died at age 26 from a fever. His grave marker disappeared in the 19th century but the North Carolina Colonial Dames erected another in 1929.
