Funeral Monday for Verne M. Kellen

Verne M. Kellen, 75, longtime Remsen, Ia., resident and retired bussinessman, died unexpectedly Friday, Mar. 13, 1987, at St. Mary's Hospital, Nebraska City, Nebr., of an apparent heart attack.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Mar. 16, at St. Mary's Catholic Church here. Rev. Dennis Sefcik officiated. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery under direction of the Fisch Funeral Home.

Mr. Kellen was born Aug. 28, 1911, at rural Alton, Ia., the son of William and Anne (Melrose) Kellen. He was raised in the Alton area and attended parochial school there.

He came to Remsen in 1934 and managed the Hartford Cream Station, and later entered the ice business.

He married Marie Ludwig on June 27, 1939, in Remsen, where they made their home.

In 1940 Mr. Kellen established Kellen Produce and Feed, which he operated until retiring in 1976.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, and member and past president of the Remsen Lions Club.

Surviving are his wife, Marie, of Remsen; a son, Michael of Omaha, Nebr.; a foster son, Thomas Wess; six grandchildren; three foster grandchildren; two brothers, Vic of Alton and Robert of Remsen; and three sisters, Mrs. Nick (Dorothy) Wanderscheld of Remsen, Mrs. Vernon (Frances) Wess of Fairmont, Minn., and Mrs. Francis (Esther) Gaffey of LeMars.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Mrs. Jim (Sue) Heisler on May 25, 1976; three brothers, Ray, William Jr., and Stanley; and three sisters, Mrs. Lee (Florence) Henrich, Mrs. John (Lillian) Gengler, and Mrs. Ed (Evelyn) Harmon.

Pallbearers were Bob Gengler, Steve Wanderscheid, and Bill, Dave, Dale, and Russ Kellen.

Knights of Columbus honorary pallbearers were Ernest Groepper, Ed Guntren, Dr. E. H. Pick, John Ritz, and Gilbert and Ray Schroeder.
